Starting March 10, 2025, major renovations and new builds in BC are required to comply with updated seismic resilience standards and adaptable dwelling unit requirements under the 2024 BC Building Code. These changes aren’t just technical, they directly impact how homes are built and updated.

Homes in multi-unit buildings will now require at least 20% of first-floor units to include adaptable features—such as wider doorways, reinforced bathroom walls for future grab bar installation, accessible controls, and open layouts. Projects already in progress before March 8, 2024 may still follow the 2018 code if permits are submitted by March 8, 2027.
